I don't think I have to start explaining what Linux actually is, but if you're still new to the subject then I'd suggest having a look at Wikipedia. Its basicly a Unix-like operating system developed by Linus Torvalds. Still, while it makes a very decent and usefull operating system it is my personal opinion that the OS itself wasn't the greatest achievement. The bigger issue was the momentum which was gained by the Open Source "movement". If it wasn't for groups like GNU then I doubt we would have been able to download software like Solaris for free today.

Anyway, quite some things have changed on this section. I removed the HOWTO's I've written about security and how to transform divx movies into VCD's since the information is rather (out)dated where movie conversion is concerned. As for security, the fact that I don't consider Linux to be as secure as it should really doesn't help my motivation to keep such an HOWTO document up to date. But who knows, maybe in the near future I'll write up some very common "do's and dont's for Unix environments". For now my main concern is getting the website as a whole back in order.
